Introduction

This privacy policy tells you what personal information SeaLink Travel Group New Zealand Limited, Freightlink Limited and Sealink Pine Harbour Limited (we, our, or SeaLink collectively) collects about people who use our services. It sets out why we collect your information, the steps we take to protect it, the circumstances in which we may share your information, and how you can contact us if you have any questions or concerns. 

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner provides further details of the Privacy Act 2020 and how it protects personal information in New Zealand.

The information we collect 

Generally

As part of our operations we may gather certain types of information about the users of our sites or services:

Personal information.  “Personal information” is any information that can identify an individual either directly or indirectly (i.e. by reference to other information we have access to).  Such personal information might include your name, address, contact details, billing information and other information required to process transactions.  Such personal information is provided by you (or someone authorised by you or your organisation) when you use our services (e.g. catch a ferry with us or book freight forwarding services with us). Providing personal information will always be optional for you. However, some services may not be available to you if you choose not to provide personal information to us.


Membership Data

We collect a range of personal information from you to provide you with our services and manage our business. This includes:

SeaLink Membership
SeaLink offers a customer membership, (‘’Membership’’), designed to offer users a more rewarding and personalised customer experience. We may collect the following for your SeaLink membership:
- Full name
- Email address
- Telephone number

- Purchase or enquiry history

- Payment details 

If you apply for a SeaLink Resident Membership we will also collect your proof of residence and a photograph, as well as a copy of your student identification if relevant.  

Newsletter Membership

When you subscribe to receive our e-news updates, we collect certain information such as your name and email address and preferred destination so that we can advise you of special travel deals, events and news.

Other personal information we collect

We also collect personal information when you visit our terminals, travel on our ferries, or engage with us by phone, email or social media. This can include your name, contact details and payment information.   

For security and health and safety reasons we operate CCTV on our ferries and inside and outside our ferry terminals. We also record phone calls made to our call centre for training, quality assurance and administrative purposes.  

Who we share this information with

Your personal information may be hosted with, or disclosed to, a service provider. This includes (but isn’t limited to) service providers assisting us with the purposes set out below, information technology suppliers and research agencies. Our agreements with them protect the information that we collect from any unauthorised use.

Your personal information will only be shared with other third parties when we believe in good faith that we are required or permitted to do so by law.

We may also share your personal information with third parties in order to protect and defend our rights, property or safety (or that of third parties), including enforcing our privacy policy and any terms of use, or in connection with investigating and preventing fraud or other suspected illegality or security issues.

What else we do with personal information

We may use your personal information for the following purposes:

  • To process any transactions that you might make on our site.
  • To help provide any other services that you have requested.
  • To improve the services we offer to you (including using personal information for our internal research and analytics purposes).
  • To offer the most relevant information suitable to you and your interests.
  • For any marketing, promotional, publicity or market research that we might undertake.
  • From time to time we may use your data to target you through social media channels, like Facebook. In this case, we match encrypted (hashed) email addresses with encrypted Facebook data to identify a match in a secure environment. The hashed data is deleted as soon as the match is complete and never kept or used by Facebook or shared with any third party.
  • For any other purposes for which you have given permission or which the law authorises us to do.

Overseas Disclosures 

In some instances, we use third parties to process your personal information on our behalf. Some of these parties are based outside of New Zealand. We require these companies to have processes in place to protect your personal information


Privacy Breaches 

If a privacy breach occurs that is likely to cause you serious harm, we will:
 - Notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, and
 - Inform you directly

We have procedures in place to identify and respond promptly to any such breach.


Security of Your Personal Information

Your details are securely stored in our systems. We use physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect your personal information. 

You are also responsible for helping to protect the security of your personal information. For instance, never give out your password, and safeguard your username and password when you are using our services. You are responsible for maintaining the security of any device on which you access our services.

What about cookies?

A cookie is a small file that resides on your computer and is recognised by our server when you visit our sites. Cookies provide details of your IP address, the computer platform that you use (e.g. Mac or Windows), the browser that you use (e.g. Microsoft Explorer, Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Safari) and what domain you are accessing our sites from.

This data is usually collected and reported in a way that does not identify individual users. However, if you interact with personalised features (e.g., log in or submit a form), we may collect and associate your activity with your profile, in accordance with this privacy policy.

We use cookies for a number of purposes, including to:

  • Track traffic patterns to our sites (including estimating and reporting on our total audience size and traffic).
  • Ensure that the most relevant content is being shown to you.
  • Allow you to enter certain site member services without having to log in each time you visit.
  • Keep track of preferences you specify while you are visiting our sites.
  • Conduct research to improve the content and services provided on our sites.

If you would rather we did not use cookies with you, you can refuse them by turning them off in your browser and/or deleting them from your hard drive. You will still be able to visit our sites.

What about third-party cookies?

Third-party vendors, including Google, use first-party cookies (such as the Google Analytics cookie) and third-party cookies (such as the Facebook cookie) together to inform, optimise, and serve ads on the internet based on someone's past visits to our website.

You are free to opt out of Google's use of cookies by visiting Google's Opt Out Page.

What about other websites?

This privacy policy only relates to the personal information that we process. You should be aware that we are not responsible for the privacy practices of third parties. Our site does contain links to websites belonging to third parties. You should check their privacy policies before providing personal information to them or any other third party.

Opting in and opting out of receiving communications

If you are a Member, you can opt out of receiving electronic communications from us via the Membership login on the website.  You are also welcome to contact us in order to 'opt-out' of receiving further communications from us. We will action your request within a reasonable timeframe from receipt of your message. Email us with your full name, email address and mobile number for us to action your request.

How long do we keep personal information?

We retain your personal information only as long as necessary to:
 - Provide you with our services
 - Fulfil legal or regulatory obligations
 - Resolve disputes
 - Prevent fraud

If you cancel your Membership or unsubscribe, we will delete your personal information unless it is necessary or required to meet legal or regulatory requirements, resolve disputes, or to prevent fraud or abuse.


Access and Correction of Personal Information

You have the right to request:
 - Access to the personal information we hold about you, and
 - Correction of that personal information.

You can access and update some personal information via the Membership login. You are also welcome to contact us at any time to request access to or correction of your personal information.
