Why Great Barrier Island is a must do?

23 Jul 2025 Destination

Great Barrier Island rewards the curious traveller with its wild landscapes, vibrant food scene, and unique experiences.

Great Barrier Island (Aotea) is a stunning, off-grid paradise just over a few hours by ferry from Auckland, and it’s a destination that rewards the curious traveller with its wild landscapes, vibrant food scene, and unique experiences.

Why Great Barrier Island is a must‑visit

Aotea’s pristine wilderness: At 285 km², the sixth-largest in New Zealand, Great Barrier dominates the Hauraki Gulf with volcanic hills topped by Mount Hobson (Hirakimatā, 627 m) and dense native bush dotted with rare plants and birds such as kākā and black petrel.

Dark‑Sky Sanctuary: Designated in 2017 by the International Dark‑Sky Association, the island offers world‑class stargazing with minimal light pollution.

Off-grid lifestyle: Most homes run on solar power, wind turbines or batteries, there’s no reticulated electricity here, lending a slower, eco-conscious pace known as ‘Barrier time’.

Seasonality: Summer offers beach and boating vibes, winter appeals with dramatic skies and fewer crowds.

Getting there with SeaLink: Bring your own vehicle

Bringing your own car or 4WD offers freedom to explore all corners of the island, from rugged eastern beaches to sheltered western bays and in the long run can save money, especially for groups or multi‑day stays. You avoid hiring costs and limited rental availability. Book in advance, especially for peak periods; vehicle bookings are essential.

Our vehicle ferry runs to Tryphena several times weekly, in about 4.5 hours from our Auckland City terminal. During the busy period over December and January we sail up to 7 times a week. During the winter we sail four times a week. We visit the Port Fitzroy wharf in the north of the island once a week over summer and every second week over winter.

Top things to do & explore

Bush and hiking adventures: Hike Mount Hobson and get a birds-eye-view of the island. Or take a leisurely stroll to the Kaitoke Hot Springs, a natural hot pool in the bush.

Water Activities: If it’s fishing, diving or boating you’re into, you’ve come to the right island! Join Hooked on Barrier for an unforgettable day fishing, or bring along your surfcaster and try your luck from the beach. The beautiful beaches are a great spot for a swim or a snorkel and for surfers, there are some incredible waves to be caught.

Stargaze under True Darkness: Great Barrier’s Dark Sky Sanctuary status brings unparalleled star views. Join a guided star‑gazing tour with Good Heavens Stargazing, perfect on winter’s clear nights.

Sip & Savour Local Brews and Distilled Spirits: Sample island-produced drinks: Aotea Brewing Co. crafts beer uniquely made on the island. Visit Island Gin producers for unique, award winning botanicals.

Great Barrier Island is a place of contrasts, wild and peaceful, remote yet full of hospitality. Bring your car on the SeaLink ferry, and you unlock the freedom to roam from hot springs to surf beaches, from forest tracks to harbourside cafés. With local beers from Aotea Brewing, handcrafted Island Gin, stargazing under a pristine sky, and guided fishing or chartered sailing, it's an island that rewards both the adventurer and the relaxed traveller. Escape to Barrier time, feel the calm, taste the island’s best, and breathe deep the wild beauty of Aotea.
